As part of the modernization project for the 2L-4000/DC-6m/s hoisting machine for KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., MWM Elektro undertook a comprehensive task that included the replacement of key elements of the power and control systems, as well as the modernization of the associated infrastructure. As a result of the work carried out, the hoisting machine operating in Shaft L-III has been equipped with modern control and power systems.
Scope of modernization work
The project involved the reconstruction of the power supply and control system for the DC motor drive of the hoisting machine, including:
•Replacement of the control, visualization, and machine operation diagnostics systems, allowing for precise monitoring of operating parameters and quick diagnosis of potential faults.
•Installation of a new 6 kV RS-12m switchgear, which increased the reliability and safety of the power system. The new three-compartment switchgear replaced the previous two-compartment model.
•Replacement of auxiliary 500V and 400/230V switchgear, ensuring stable power supply for auxiliary equipment.
•Modernization of the lighting system in the hoisting machine building, including the installation of emergency lighting, which operates independently of the main power source, critical in case of potential outages.
•Reconstruction of the signaling and shaft communication system, enabling the use of additional functions.
Technologies Introduced to the Hoisting Machine
The new power supply system for the main drive motor includes two 630 kVA converter transformers, powering two DCS880 reversible thyristor converter units with a rated current of 1500 A. Non-reversible backup thyristor converters, DCF0803, were also introduced, responsible for powering the excitation circuit of the drive motor.
An important aspect of the modernization was the introduction of control systems based on the GRZ-08 digital drive regulator and two AC800M controllers, providing precise management of the machine’s movement. The control station was equipped with modern indicators, meters, and operational elements, enabling intuitive operation and real-time monitoring.
Safety and Efficiency
The use of the H-C MWM-42 electro-hydraulic control and power supply unit, consisting of two aggregates and a switchboard, reduced the likelihood of hoist downtime caused by potential failures of components within this system.
Auxiliary Drive with Emergency Power Supply
The hoisting machine also gained an auxiliary drive, allowing it to move at speeds of up to 1 m/s with a licensed human load mass of 4.5 Mg. Modern solutions such as a Bevel Helical Gearbox by Befared, an ACS880 frequency converter, and a 200 kVA generator ensure operation even in the event of a power outage in the industrial grid.
Approval Procedures and Equipment Commissioning
The described set of components underwent procedures for approval for use in the mining plant. MWM Elektro conducted tests under the conditions of the mine’s operation, culminating in a decision by the President of WUG.
